Negligent Security Lawsuit in Bergen County, New Jersey Settles For $7.8 Million

A judge in Bergen County recently approved a $7.8 million settlement in a case involving the murder of a woman and assault on her infant son by an intruder in a Jersey City, NJ apartment building. The attacks were allegedly driven by a dispute over a drug deal with the decedent’s husband. Among those sued by the decedent’s estate were the owner of the apartment building, the building management company and the building security company. Key facts in contention were the alleged time that the intruder entered the building and whether the security company was on duty at or around that time. The intruder entered the building through a security checkpoint when he followed another resident through a secure door. The case settled following jury selection.
