Plaintiff Awarded $3.2 Million in Supermarket Slip and Fall Case in Cumberland County, NJ

On December 19, 2013, a jury in Cumberland County, New Jersey awarded a plaintiff $3.2 million dollars for injuries sustained in a slip and fall accident in a ShopRite supermarket. The plaintiff slipped on rice that leaked onto the floor of the supermarket from a punctured container. As a result of the fall, plaintiff suffered permanent injuries to her head, back, and shoulder. It was alleged that the supermarket did not have a loss prevention employee and failed to create a fall prevention plan, contrary to company recommendations and industry practice. The verdict consisted of $2.7 million for pain and suffering, $241,000 in lost wages, $160,000 for medical expenses and $160,000 for future medical costs.
